Application of artificial intelligence in tourism: A systematic literature review

The study of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the tourism industry has experienced remarkable growth in scientific output over the last decade. This paper presents a systematic review of the literature on the application of AI in tourism, based on the analysis of 286 articles published between 2014 and 2024 and available in the Scopus database. To this end, a mixed methodology is used that combines traditional literature review with bibliometric analysis (VOSviewer and Bibliometrix). The results show an exponential increase in publications since 2018 and a concentration of studies around five main thematic lines: tourist-AI relationship, service automation, ethics and privacy, tourist demand, and social media. Gaps in the literature are also identified, allowing for the creation of a research agenda aimed at strengthening the responsible and sustainable development of AI in the tourism sector.
