Abstract
The Spanish tourism industry is going through a prosperous moment, with a signifi cant increase of both domestic and
international demand. Over the past half century, it has been thoroughly confi rmed that this is a strategic sector of the national economy
and is has played a key role in the current economic recovery.
As a result of its transversal nature, the tourism industry generates both indirect and direct effects (GDP, employment and balance
of payments) in the economy, whichincreaseits competitiveness. Therefore, this means that tourism positive effects are benefi cial to all
economic activities. As well, the Spanish tourism industry boasts a leading position worldwide since the middle of last century, with a
huge potential for further development and growth. These crucial achievements would not have been possible without adapting to the
dynamic economic, social and technological environment, as well as to the preferences and demands of tourists of the 21st century.
The Spanish tourist model must work towards achieving sustainability, reducing seasonality and distributing benefi ts, not only to
coastal regions, but also to interior regions, and therefore diversifythe variety of tourist products (culture, nature, gastronomy, shopping,
