Generative tourism in rural areas A methodological proposal to activate destinations in contexts of depopulation

Isabel Sánchez Tejado
Abstract

This essay presents the Generative Tourism Model (MTG) as a solution to alleviate rural depopulation and revitalise territories in a sustainable manner. This model is based on three premises: sustainability, community participation and protection of the local way of life. Based on these principles, a five-step methodology is articulated to transform rural areas with tourism potential into structured destinations with their own identity. The paper analyses the conceptual framework of generative tourism in dialogue with approaches such as sustainable tourism, regenerative tourism and endogenous development, and presents experiences developed in rural areas of Spain and Portugal that demonstrate the socio-economic and environmental benefits that this model has brought to these areas.
