Main Article Content
The International Social Tourism Organisation (ISTO) has as its main mission to promote the development of fair and sustainable tourism for all. In the framework of the celebration of its 60th anniversary in 2023, a new reference text on the
Social Sustainability of Tourism was presented. This text, which constitutes the second Addendum to the Montreal Declaration «Towards a social and humanist vision of tourism» adopted in 1996, affirms that the social sustainability of tourism is the entry axis that acts as a lever to activate the other two pillars, economic and environmental.
The Addendum presents a definition of what is meant by social sustainability of tourism, criteria subdivided into five broad categories for assessing this social sustainability as well as ISTO’s commitments. The evolution of this work, which involves all
actors in the tourism sector, reflects the importance of giving priority to qualitative tourism that benefits all parties.
In brief, the article presents a definition and fields of action of social sustainability in tourism and a proposal of indicators for each of them.
