Analysis of the psychosocial impacts on local communities in the touristified areas of Barcelona and Lloret de Mar

Anna Soliguer-Guix
Abstract

This article investigates the psychosocial impacts of touristification, a phenomenon that transforms local communities through increased tourist activity. Through the theoretical frameworks of Social Exchange Theory and Emotional Solidarity Theory, we analyze how the communities of Barcelona and Lloret de Mar respond emotionally to tourism. Using a quantitative approach, attitudes towards tourists are evaluated, highlighting elements such as hospitality, emotional proximity and empathy. The results reveal that emotional responses vary according to the perception of the negative impacts of tourism, such as stress and the feeling of loss of control, influenced by economic dependence and demographic factors such as gender and age. In addition, the notion of “tourismphobia” is challenged, suggesting that negative attitudes are linked to broader political dynamics and socioeconomic contexts. This study provides a deeper understanding of emotions in the interaction between residents and tourists, emphasizing the need for tourism planning that considers psychosocial impacts, especially in relation to women and youth.
