La Alquimia de las piedras Centro de Interpretación de las canteras romanas de Tarraco

Abstract

The project The Alchemy of Stone proposes the creation of a centre of interpretation being the leading theme how the Roman civilization shaped the ancient world into the world we have inherited by means of a key element: stone. From an apparently worthless inorganic material, Romans managed to turn it into the philosophical stone which allowed them to build a network of roads in order to conquer territories and expand their empire, founding new cities and providing them with the necessary infrastructures to live as well as to enrich and glorify the empire; a treasure and heritage wealth still existing today. Through a model of discovery, the centre of interpretation takes us for a walk along history and reveals the work carried out in Roman quarries: slavery and techniques which made possible Tarraco’s monumentality and stateliness. It consists of two spaces: the centre with its museographic layout and Roda de Berà quarry, where extraction marks can still be clearly seen. Conceived as a museum all’aperto, the site has been fitted out with museographic modules both to explain and illustrate the operation of a quarry. The importance of quarries and of the individuals who worked there is thus highlighted. Through the stone-built legacy we aim at depicting and making clear to the visitor the society which existed in our territory over 2000 years ago; a society that transmitted a conception of the city and society we inherited. The centre becomes a tourist and cultural resource that presents and spreads the knowledge of local heritage, diversifies the tourist offer in Roda de Berà and puts forward a number of products to complement and promote the tourist and cultural offer in the surrounding areas of Tarraco.
