Abstract
Spain held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the fifth time during the first half of 2010, at a crucial juncture in EU policy. The recent entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon has brought tourism within the scope of EU policy, thereby providing EU Member States with the opportunity to establish joint actions aimed at promoting the world’s most important tourist region, contributing to sustainable growth, job creation, social welfare, improved quality of life and the economic and social cohesion of the Member States.
